Welcome

What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system, similar to Windows or Mac that is free to use, free to modify and many times free to download. Linux runs in many business computers environments, as well as a home user desktop. Linux is secure, without viruses.

What is Open Source Software?

Open Source Software is software written by a "community" of developers and users who contribute their own time. Open Source Software program code is open for anybody to look at and modify for their own use. An example is OpenOffice.org a full featured office suite with a word processor, spreadsheet and more.

What is a LUG?

A LUG is a gathering of a group of people who use Linux. Many LUGs also cover *nix (such as BSD), using windows programs in Linux, networking, and general tech issues.

What NCKLUG is not!

A LUG is not a place for business promotion. Lug members are not allowed to discuss pricing for services or products they sell. NCKLUG is not a social drinking club, but a family oriented place to learn about Linux and computers in general. While it is expected LUG members will discuss various issues about linux and programs, even within thier work environment, the LUG is not a primary free support channel. If a LUG member want's to procure the services of another LUG member, they can do so outside of the LUG meetings and channels.

NCKLUG's Purpose

North Central Kansas Linux User's Group (NCKLUG) strives to promote Linux and Open Source Software (OSS). We accomplish this by providing a meeting place where beginners, like minded luggites and tech professionals can gather to install, use, and discuss Linux and OSS.

In the next year you will see tutorials, presentations, installations and demonstrations of Linux and OSS software. If requested NCKLUG may provide some basic programming courses.

The group is open to all young and old, beginners and experts, or the uniquely curious.
